Hunger Relief

This year, United Way of Washtenaw County invested in a countywide study of hunger and food security under the leadership and recommendation of Food Gatherers and local food providers. The new Food Security Plan addresses the following:

  • who is using food pantries
  • what is the capacity of the current pantries
  • what and where are the largest unmet needs
  • what are best practices that could be effective in Washtenaw County
  • and it highlights the growing access issues for people needing fresh, healthy food

According to the study about 76% of respondents received food from a food pantry on a regular basis, 35% of respondents indicated the pantry is their only source of food.

Your United Way's investment of $25,000 leveraged additional resources from the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation and the James A. and Faith Knight Foundation for this timely community resource and planning document.

"Have you ever wondered how children of low-income families receive nutritious meals when school is not in session? Without access to subsidized breakfast and lunch programs parents often struggle with adding meals into their daily budgets. Your gift to United Way of Washtenaw County helps us reach more hungry children and their families with summer meal distributions. Because of you and the United Way of Washtenaw County, we can distribute nearly 5 million pounds of food to more than 150 local community programs serving our neighbors’ in need.”
