New Funding Model

Dear Friend,

Washtenaw United Way has been on a yearlong journey to create a new model to invest community funds into areas that will create lasting change and address the underlying causes of some of our community's most pressing problems. I am pleased to be able to share with you the results of that journey and the vision for the future.

The volunteer leadership of Washtenaw United Way has crafted a new plan of action that aligns with and supports existing plans to improve our community. The core of the new plan is five focused areas of support including:

  • Childcare - Improving the availability and quality of needed early care, childcare resources and basic needs support for children age 0-6.
  • Food - Improving the countywide systemic coordination and efficiency of food collection and distribution efforts.
  • Shelter - Increasing the supply of, and improving access to, decent, affordable housing with supportive services that provide emergency, transitional, and permanent housing.
  • Access to Healthcare - Increasing the number of children and families who have access to and receive health care.
  • Aging in Place - Ensuring that basic needs and resources are available that support independence and safety for the older population and their caregivers.

The new plan is one of inclusion, not exclusion, as it opens the door to all 501(c)3 organizations in Washtenaw County that meet the criteria to apply for funding. If you should have questions or comments, please contact me directly. We look forward to your support and help to keep our community strong and caring. Together we can accomplish much and advance the common good.

Most Sincerely,
Board Chair President
